Importing and exporting

Drives you recorded with something else can come in as GPX, and everything the app holds can go back out as a file. Both work without an account.

Importing GPX

Settings, then Import GPX, on the phone. Pick a file and Android hands the app that one file.

An imported trace goes through the same matching as a live recording and counts the same way, which is how you get credit for drives you took before the app existed. Files with no timestamps work: matching depends on position, not timing. A large file takes a moment.

What the app says when a file doesn’t work:

• “Couldn’t read any track points from this file.” — the file holds no track points the app can read.
• “This trip was already imported.” — a trip with that start and end is on the phone already.
• “Nothing to import: that trace covers no Interstate and barely moves.” — the trace matched no Interstate.

GPX is the only format that comes in. There is no import in the browser, and no way to import a JSON export back.

Exporting from the phone

• Export all as JSON — Settings, then Data. Your trips with their full-resolution points, your achievements, your coverage, and the matched rows the coverage was worked out from, in one file — written wherever Android’s file picker puts it.
• Export GPX — on a single trip’s own screen, from its raw points.

Exporting from the browser

Settings, then Your data, at app.interstatetracker.com:

• Everything, as JSON — your account, every trip fact it has recorded, the coverage worked out from those facts, and your passkeys’ details. The other two are views of this one.
• Trips, as GPX — one track per trip, from the simplified trace your account holds: thinned to 50 meters, times floored to the minute.
• Coverage, as GeoJSON — one line per clinched stretch, drawn on the road, with its reference miles, when you first drove it and how many trips have.

The browser’s exports are built from what your account was sent. The phone’s export is built from what the phone holds, which includes the full-resolution points the account never receives.

Once a file is written it is an ordinary file on your device, outside the app’s control.

Deleting a trip

Delete a trip from the phone or from the browser. It takes the trip’s miles, the coverage they credited and the trace with it, and the deletion travels: from the browser it goes at once, and from the phone on its next sync.

If you have no account

The phone holds the only copy. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stored, and that cannot be undone, so export first. With an account, the server keeps what it was sent until you delete the trip or the account.
